Auckland Beaches

Auckland's beaches are an important part of what makes the city great. Here you can laze away the days in the sunny Auckland weather on golden sand, with safe gentle water near the city, or ride mountainous surf at one of the west-coast beaches.

Beaches close to Auckland, New Zealand are located on the North Shore on an Auckland map, with the beaches of Narrow Neck, Long Bay, Cheltenham and Takapuna. You can hop on a ferry to reach the North shore of Auckland and visit the charming village of Devonport and Cheltenham Beach.

Beaches to the east are located along the scenic Tamaki Drive, with the most popular being Mission Bay, with Kohimarama and St Heliers also offering safe sheltered beaches.

If you travel through Waitemata Harbour or Auckland Harbour, as it is commonly referred to, you will reach Waiheke Island known for its golden sandy beaches and beautiful coves.

Some of the more scenic beaches are a short drive from Auckland. Car rental is one way to reach these beaches, or you can join a guided tour of Auckland's hidden gems.

About 40 minutes drive from Auckland you come to the popular Pohutukawa Coast area, with beautiful beaches such as Maraetai Beach.

The most ruggedly beautiful, wild and remote beaches are found on the West Coast. With their volcanic black sand and wild surf, these beaches are some of the most spectacular you will see in New Zealand. Visit Piha Beach, Karekare Beach, Whatipu beach, Muriwai Beach or Te Henga (Bethells beach)
